Mammotome Biopsy

What Is a Breast Biopsy?

A lump may be found in your breast from self-examination, physician exams, mammograms, or other screening procedures. A breast ultrasound will remove some of the lump’s tissue to confirm if the lump is cancerous. Of the 1.6 million breast biopsies performed each ear in the U.S., about 80% of them show non-cancerous results. A biopsy is the only way to know for sure if the lump is cancerous.

Because most lumps are not cancerous, your physician will try to minimize the process involved in diagnosing the lump. The Mammotome biopsy is a great biopsy option because it doesn’t take long and the patient can carry on with their daily activities immediately after the biopsy is complete.

What Is a Mammotome Breast Biopsy?

The Mammotome Biopsy System is minimally invasive and causes little discomfort while also being very accurate in helping the doctor diagnose breast cancer or other breast abnormalities.

A sample of the lump will be removed during the biopsy which is done in our Breast Care Center rather than an operating room. Plus the incision is very small and does not typically require stitches.

What You Can Expect

Before your Mammotome biopsy, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area where the incision will be done. The procedure typically takes less than one hour, and you will be able to resume your normal activities immediately afterward.

  1. During the procedure, you will either lie on your back or face down on a specially designed table.
  2. The Mammotome probe is inserted only once through a ¼ inch incision in your breast.
  3. Once the probe is positioned at the area of concern, it gently vacuums, cuts, and removes tissue for examination and evaluation.
  4. The single incision is closed with a small adhesive bandage.
