Neonatal Care

Babies born prematurely, as early as 24 weeks of gestation, receive special care in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Level II and Level III neonatal intensive care unit includes 20 beds and offers the most advanced neonatal care in Hidalgo County. A neonatologist is available 24 hours a day and the entire NICU staff is experienced and highly trained in the advanced care required for babies with special needs.

In addition, the NICU at Mission Regional Medical Center provides:

  • A clinical laboratory on the unit staffed round the clock by Respiratory Therapists
  • 24-hour coverage by a pharmacist experienced in neonatal pharmacology
  • Classical music program medically proven to accelerate normal growth and healing for premature infants, and the establishment of normal feeding patterns
  • Direct access to and communication with the OB labor and delivery rooms, and surgical suites
  • Immediate availability of stored, digital radiographs for transmission and review
  • Dedicated rooms when necessary to keep a baby isolated from others
  • Instructional and support services from an on-site, certified Lactation Consultant
  • Access to the Mother’s Milk Bank
  • State-of-the-art NICU surgical room for PDA ligation, omphalocele repair, gastroschisis reduction/closure, GT placement and other procedures
  • Conference rooms for parent education
  • “Little Miracles Room” for parents to stay as they participate in the care of their newborn and prepare for discharge. This simulated home environment allows parents to gain knowledge and confidence for the tasks ahead in a safe setting, while enjoying the support and expertise of the NICU staff.
