ribbon cutting(Mission, TX) Mission Regional Medical Center Center officially opened the doors of the new Sexual Assault Forensic Unit on Tuesday, December 15th. The S.A.F.E. Place is a Forensic Unit dedicated to serving victims of sexual assault, physical violence, abuse and neglect.

The Forensic Unit is staffed by a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner trained to collect forensic evidence that may be submitted for expert analysis and used in the prosecution of alleged perpetrators.

“The S.A.F.E. Place is the first and only unit of its kind in Hidalgo County,” states Evonne Lopez, RN, CA/CP, SANE. “Adult and pediatric victims of assault and abuse may come in on their own, or be referred by a physician or a local organization such as Mujeres Unidas. In fact, anyone who has been a victim can access our services through the Emergency Department, any time, day or night, with or without the prior involvement of law enforcement.”

Construction of the Forensic Unit was made possible through generous financial gifts from Rio Grande Valley Harley–Davidson, Valley Nuclear, Inc., and the Mission Regional Health Professionals Association. In addition, funds donated by the City of Mission and the Mission Police Department enabled the hospital to equip the unit with a state-of-the-art Secure Digital Forensic Imaging (SDFI) Camera.
