Mission, TX November 8, 2017) – Mission Regional Medical Center (MRMC), a member of Prime Healthcare, has been named among the top 10% in the
nation for Overall Orthopedic Services two years in a row ( 2017-2018)
and is the recipient of the Healthgrades Orthopedic Surgery Excellence
Award two years in a row (2017-2018), according to this year’s evaluation from
Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians
and hospitals.
Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500
hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and
conditions.*
“We are very pleased with the recognition, particularly since it
is based on patient outcomes. It’s a credit to everyone involved
in caring for orthopedic patients at Mission Regional Medical Center,”
said Kane Dawson, CEO. “Most importantly, these ratings demonstrate
to the communities we serve that Mission Regional Medical Center is among
the very best of hospitals across the country and that exceptional orthopedic
care is truly close to their homes.”
These achievements are part of findings released last month by Healthgrades
and are featured in their2018 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ
dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. This variation
in care has a significant impact on health outcomes.
“These awards show the ongoing commitment of the employees, nurses
and doctors of Mission Regional Medical Center to provide excellent orthopedic
care to the South Texas community,” said Dr. Jose Marina, DO, Chief
of Surgery and Director of the Joint Replacement Institute.
“Throughout the last several years MRMC has put protocols into place
to take care of orthopedic conditions based on evidence based medicine.
These protocols are reviewed annually and changes are made accordingly.
Over the last year MRMC has been participating in a Knowledge Exchange
Program with several orthopedic surgeons and hospitals in India to help
them improve outcomes based on the Mission Regional model. We will continue
to strive every day to provide the best and most up to date orthopedic
care in South Texas,” added Dr. Marina.
The Joint Replacement Institute at Mission Regional Medical Center provides
a unique service to patients who need orthopedic surgery. Patients are
prepared weeks in advance before surgery and after surgery in order to
ensure the best positive results. The Joint Replacement Institute has
also been awarded the Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission for
Knee and Hip Replacement surgery.
“Consumers place high value on information about hospital quality
and use it to evaluate their choices for care,” said Brad Bowman,
MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Hospitals that have achieved
recognition for their quality outcomes prove their commitment to their
patients and their community at large.”
*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare
inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide
to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures,
and evaluate outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer
data provided by 17 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s
quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance,
and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts
are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected),
3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically
significantly worse than expected) categories. The complete
